I am professional, a professional patient.
And I deserve respect for my hard-won expertise.

Picture

I have realized I should live before I die.
I have realized life doesn’t end with a diagnosis.
I have realized purpose can come from pain.
I have realized that gratitude can coexist with grief.

"I live with an invisible disability, and AwareNow is determined to help me make it seen.
I have a heart condition which kills people without warning, and AwareNow is determined to help me sound the alarm.
I have a story which could save lives and comfort souls, and AwareNow is determined to help it be read."

About Bethany

Bethany is a Bionic Babe living her life as a scars-out kind of person. She has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or HCM. It’s a debilitating disease and a life-threatening chronic condition. HCM can cause sudden cardiac arrest which is why Bethany is bionic, currently with her second implanted defibrillator, though in her 20’s.

She is the Co-Founder of HeartCharged, the mission of which is to end preventable deaths, especially from undiagnosed heart conditions and sudden cardiac arrest, and offer patient-to-patient support. Some of her favorite HeartCharged work includes giving out care packages, meet-up’s, and talking or texting one-on-one with HeartCharged friends.

Bethany is a big proponent of body positivity. The gratitude and acceptance she has shown in her journey has inspired many to accept their bodies and life-saving treatments as well. Her ‘Every Bunny’ campaign is meant to demonstrate that you can feel pride in your medical journey; it’s not something to hide or that makes you less than. It includes her with pictures of Jolt, her aptly named original S-ICD (implanted defibrillator), which made her come to grips, with gratitude, with having a large bionic box making her side protrude. She even rhinestoned Jolt when it was surgically replaced and proudly keeps it on her desk as a way to honor her medical odyssey and start conversations with others.

As a young girl, Bethany had ballerina dreams which she worked to make a reality. She attended a renowned performing arts high school, went into a pre-professional ballet program, spent summers at the most elite training, and earned a degree in dance. But then the reality of her worsening cardiac condition meant being a ballerina was only a dream once more.

Bethany works professionally in the political arena. She also advocates fiercely in the same space to make life-saving measures, which could save the lives of thousands of children each year, not hoped for but ensured. She cries hard and fights harder when a preventable death occurs.

Bethany is a thoughtful author, frequent podcast guest, and bold speaker. She is a talented social media content creator.
