Chances are at some point in your life, you or a family member will be prescribed a narcotic pain reliever - Vicodin, OxyContin, Percocet, etc. - by a physician or dentist. Back in 2010, enough prescription pain medications were prescribed to medicate every American adult around-the-clock for a month. Yet many don't understand - or they underestimate - the addictive nature of these medications, especially if abused. Prescription drug abuse is the fastest-growing drug problem facing our Nation today. In 2020, among people aged 12 or older, 9.5 million people misused opioids in the form of heroin or prescription pain relievers. Of these 9.5 million people, 9.3 million of them misused prescription pain relievers. Unfortunately, today's drug addiction is no longer someone else's problem. With millions currently abusing prescription pain medications and thousands more moving on to heroin, be aware that the sad reality is it will probably touch all of us sooner or later. The stories told here about the opioid epidemic are chapters of people’s lives shared to create awareness, channel hope, and change lives. These are real stories from real people. From those who have lost someone to those who have saved someone or tried, each story is a wake up call for us all. |
